Rants in the Pants, Episode 49-You Got a License for that Bird?

Created at: October 21, 2024

I sincerely regret that chickens and ducks (as well as other birds) will be on the topic for the second rant in a row. I pledge that the next rant will not have anything to do with birds. This story was just too much to skip…

Do You have a license? Of course you do. We all have multiple licenses. Driver’s license, fishing license, hunting license, drone license, marriage license, professional license and many more. They all are an attempt to collect taxes and regulate the target activity. Permits and credentials also fall into this category. They are just a different name for essentially the same thing. It’s all a tax.

As much as I am against over taxation, I don’t want to imply we don’t need licenses. Many of them serve the purpose of keeping us safe. I don’t think you would want to be 30,000 feet in the air and find out the pilot was unlicensed. Nor would you like to find out the same thing about your doctor just before that gall bladder surgery. Having licensing for driving and a penalty for not having one, allows us to drive with less tension knowing that the majority of drivers have passed a test on their knowledge of the rules of the road. However, there are some licenses that go over the top.

It just so happens that I have found one of those licenses that fits the above description- bird licenses. The bird licensing law was passed, and owners must register before October 1, 2024, or face the full force of the law. The particulars are below.

  1. For now, keeping birds for eggs or meat is permitted.
  2. Pets are included in this statue.
  3. A map reference of exactly where you keep your birds must be given.
  4. Vet and husbandry details must also be included in your application.
  5. You must also identify the bird management system you are using.
  6. If the status of any bird changes, you have 30 days to notify authorities.
  7. Fines up to 500 pounds ($650) may be levied and 6 months in prison may be given to a person found in possession of unregistered birds.
  8. Your application must include a justifiable reason for keeping the bird(s) and must be resubmitted annually.

Holy cow! This little bit is just a part of it. The law goes on for 5 pages. You might have guessed by now that this law was passed in the UK. You probably don’t know that it started in the European Union. I hope you understand that with the clowns in power, it could come here.

All of this is to protect us from the bird flu which they say is now communicable to humans and poses a health risk. My question is what are they going to do about the millions of wild birds? We know that if they say the bird flu is in town, all your birds, pets, food, or otherwise will be killed to stop the spread. This is not only a bad move, but are they going to send out hunting parties and set traps for all the wild birds so they can kill them, too? It sounds a lot like the unsuccessful strategy used in Vietnam and other places by the US military where they destroyed whole towns and villages in order to bring them freedom. In other words, this whole thing is dumb-ass crazy.

In case you think I’m fooling; you might want to watch the following short video done by Neil McCoy-Ward. He’s an economist who covers the UK, EU, and the US as well. I find him to be quite on the level.  Bird licenses

Hang in there. I’m sure I’ll find something just as crazy next week!
